Shawarma. Shawarma. Shawarma…
Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish made of thinly sliced meat roasted usually on a vertical spit or rotisserie while turning slowly. However, most people now refer to shawarma is the entire tortilla wrap with meat, vegetables and sauce filling. It is such a delicious meal for any time of the day; it is also perfect to serve a large crowd as a few ingredients go a long way. It is on the top of my list along with this easy bruschetta whenever I am hosting friends in my house.
Shawarma wrap has been one of the most requested recipes, especially since the lockdown started. Making the perfect shawarma wrap involves 3 things; the meat, the vegetables, and the sauce.
The meat should be tender, juicy and flavourful- that is why I have chosen to use mince suya in this recipe. The most common vegetables to use in this wraps would be cabbage or lettuce slices with shredded carrots- it is really up to you to put in your favourite ready-to-eat vegetables.
Spicy mayoup is a perfect combination of juicy saucy flavours; that makes it the best choice for a yummy suya shawarma filling. If you prefer a lighter sauce but still packed with some spicy flavour; yajinnaise is the way to go. These are my top recommendations but you can use any other sauces or even mashed avocado.
Tortilla Wraps: try this soft fresh homemade tortilla wraps for your shawarma. This homemade wraps are very easy to make in the comfort of your own home; you know exactly what you are putting in your wrap and it is free from preservatives. Yes, you deserve to live long.
- Cabbage leaves 2 (sliced)
- Mince suya 150g
- Carrot 1 (sliced)
- Yajinnaise sauce 2 tbsps per wrap
Assemble the sliced vegetables and sauces while you cook the sausages and make oven mince suya.
P.s: The cook time for sausage would depend on what type you use. If you don’t an oven, fry the seasoned mince on stovetop with 2 tsp of oil in a frying pan.
Place tortilla wraps flat open. Start with one tortilla wrap; layer the vegetables, followed by 1 tbsp of sauce, then the mince suya and sausages, topped with another tablespoon of sauce. Roll up the tortilla wrap to enclose all the yummy filling. Warm up the wraps in a hot griddle/frying pan for 50seconds on either side.
Serve on a plate or wrap in foil, leave one end open so everyone can see what yummy filling they are about to bite into (visually appealing) or slice halfway into the wraps (I do this almost all the time for same visual reason).
